Change is coming to ChatGPT. As OpenAI retires familiar AI models like GPT-4o, it marks the end of a beloved chapter—and the beginning of a smarter, faster future.

Imagine this: you’ve been chatting with a friendly, thoughtful AI assistant every day — it greets you like an old friend, understands your quirky sense of humor, helps you brainstorm ideas, and even knows when you’re stuck on a creative block. For many users, GPT-4o was that digital companion — warm, chatty, engaging, and easy to talk to.

But now, that chapter is coming to a close.

On February 13, 2026, OpenAI will be retiring several once-popular AI models from the ChatGPT interface, including GPT-4o, marking the end of an era for many longtime users.

A Beloved Model and a Roller-Coaster Ride

GPT-4o wasn’t just another version number. When OpenAI first introduced it, users quickly formed an emotional bond with the AI’s conversational style — so much so that when the company initially removed GPT-4o during the launch of GPT-5, the internet erupted with criticism. People didn’t just want “better performance” — they wanted that feeling of chatting with something that felt warm and approachable.

After listening to feedback, OpenAI restored GPT-4o to the platform, promising that if it ever went away “for good,” users would receive ample notice. Fast forward to early 2026, and here we are again — with that retirement date officially set for mid-February.

Who’s Leaving the Chat? The Models Set for Retirement

Here’s the short list of the models being removed from the ChatGPT model selector:

  • GPT-4o

  • GPT-4.1

  • GPT-4.1 mini

  • OpenAI o4-mini

These models will no longer be selectable inside the ChatGPT web and app interface after February 13, 2026.

Why Now? A Shift to the Future

Change can feel bittersweet, especially when it involves something familiar. But behind the scenes, OpenAI says this move is about progress: the vast majority of users have already migrated to the newer GPT-5.2 and related models, which offer faster performance, broader capabilities, and even customizable personality styles like “Friendly” or “Creative.”

In other words, most people today aren’t choosing the older models — only about 0.1% of daily users still interact with GPT-4o. As tech keeps racing forward, the company is focusing its energy on building smarter, more capable AI that fits the needs of most users.

What This Means for You

If you’ve enjoyed using one of the retiring models, here’s the good news: your conversations won’t just disappear. After the retirement date, existing chats that used GPT-4o or others will smoothly switch to newer models like GPT-5.2 — which means your workflows and messages will continue without interruption.

Also important: these retirements only affect the ChatGPT interface. If you’re a developer or you’ve been using any of these models through OpenAI’s API, they remain available there for now — no immediate changes have been announced for API access.

Looking Forward Without Losing the Good Memories

It’s always a bit emotional when something familiar evolves or steps aside. GPT-4o was more than just lines of code for many users — it was a creative partner, a brainstorming buddy, and sometimes even the friendly voice you turned to on a slow afternoon. Even though it’s leaving the main stage, its legacy will live on as newer models learn from what made it special.

For now, the future of ChatGPT looks brighter and more advanced than ever — and for most people, that means better AI conversations, richer creativity, and smarter assistance.

Stay tuned as the AI story continues to unfold.
